Old Market Hall

The construction of the two-story building, which was built with a commercial function, was started in 1908 completed on October 31, 1910, and the market hall opened to the public the next day. An anonymous architectural competition was announced in 1903 in which architects from all over Hungary could take part. The competition was won by the Hungarian architect Endre Makay from , and second place was also won by a Hungarian architect from Budapest, and in third place came the well-known architectural firm of and . The city magistrate of Pressburg decided to have the design submitted by Endre Makay implemented, but he died in 1905. After the death of Endre Makay, the Pressburg municipal engineer Gyula Laubner took over the design, improved it, and brought it to completion. The construction was carried out by the master builder Ludwig Gratzl together with the well-known Pressburg construction company Pittel and Brausewetter.
The building during its construction
The building served its purpose for fifty years even after the collapse of the Danube Monarchy and the founding of Czechoslovakia. In 1960 the market hall was closed, and the television studios for Slovak Television were set up in the building. When Slovak Television gave up its studios in the market hall in 1982, the empty building became increasingly neglected. Demolition was considered, but only after the in 1989 did the ownership of the market hall return to the city, after which the building was fundamentally renovated to its original architectural form.
The building somewhere in the 1930s
Above the three entrances, which are located on the western, northern, and eastern sides of the Eclectic building, you can admire various decorative vases adorned with . There you can also admire an oval-shaped that contains the coat of arms of Bratislava, which is surrounded by a garland and in two cases with a festoon and in one case with two . All around the building, you can see loads of , which are used, among other things, to decorate the , as well as the . The latter, together with several other medallions and the that are placed above some of the second floor windows, are embellished with either festoons or . Above the other second floor windows, which are flanked by that are crowned with a Doric , you can see a pointed .
