Tabaković Family House

The two-story corner building, which was constructed somewhere between 1850 and 1875, was built according to the project that was created by the Serbian architect Milan Tabakovič for his and his family's residential needs. He was born on August 14, 1860, in Arad, in a family of Serbian Orthodox Christians, with origins in Herzegovina. His grandfather, Jeftimije Tabaković, had been a prosperous wood merchant, and his father, Jovan Tabaković, a barber and healer, was appreciated by the community. Milan started his studies at the primary school in Arad, and later on, he graduated from the Technical University of with a scholarship from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Arad. After his studies, he traveled for two years for documentation, in the big cities of Germany, Italy, and France.

After returning home to Arad, he worked as a designer, contractor, and teacher of technical drawing at the School of Arts and Crafts in Arad. In 1892, he opened his own architectural office, where, as a designer and construction contractor. Milan Tabaković's first projects as an architect are characterized by elements of late Historicism. They clearly emphasize the sense of detail and decorativeness but with Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance ornamentation. Later projects are in the style of Art Nouveau. He worked and lived in Arad until 1930 when he moved with his family to . With his wife Julka, maiden name Petrović, he had four children, the sons and and daughters Olga and Maria. Milan Tabaković passed away on September 10, 1946, in Novi Sad, where he was buried at the Almaški cemetery.

The building, which is built in the styles of Eclectic and Neo-Baroque, features a protruded part, which is decorated with a adorned with a , a , and several . A can be admired above many of the second floor windows, some of which are decorated with a lion head and surrounded by , while others are surrounded by foliage and a supported by two . Some of the other windows are surrounded by floral decorations and guttae, which are also used to decorate the . The balcony on the same floor is supported by two simple corbels and secured with a beautifully decorated wrought iron railing. Above the richly decorated on the first floor, you can admire a lion surrounded by festoons.
