Slavonski Brod Synagogue

In 1895, the foundation stone for the Jewish temple was laid and its construction was completed around 1899. The construction was executed by the design that was created by the architecture studio of the Croatian architects and . At the beginning of their stay in Slavonski Brod, the Jews did not have a house of prayer but met in private rooms in the house of Jacob Kohn, the president of the Jewish Municipality of Slavonski Brod. In 1880, Jacob Kohn donated that house and land to the Jewish Municipality with the desire to demolish it and build a synagogue on that site. Ever since the Austro-Hungarian annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878, until the beginning of the , Jews made a huge contribution to the development of Slavonski Brod and were firmly rooted in the economic and spiritual life of the city. The synagogue was burned by Nazis in 1941, and the remains were bombed by Allied forces during the of Slavonski Brod in 1944.

The Neo-Moorish building featured two towers, of which the dome that covered them was crowned with a . The part underneath the top windows, which were flanked by two crowned with a Doric , and the part between the two towers contained various . Around the same height, there were two , which were placed on top of the protruded part of the facade. In addition to many , the building also contained a beautiful rosette window that included a Star of David.
