Romanian Athenaeum

The construction of the one-story building, which was built for cultural purposes, started on October 26, 1886. The construction, which was completed on February 14, 1888, was executed by the design that was made by the French architect on the recommendation of the French architect . The building was built in the Episcopal Garden, on land that belonged to the Văcărești family, and the funds for the construction were collected by public subscription. It was built for the Romanian Athenaeum Cultural Society, which was founded in 1865, to serve as a building dedicated to art and science.

In 1935, at the initiative of , funds were collected for the construction of the concert organ, located in the background of the stage. The organ was inaugurated on April 22, 1939, by a concert given by , director of the Hochschule für Musik. During the , Bucharest was several times, whereby the building was also hit and damaged.
The building after the bombardment

The building features many columns, among which are the ones that support the tympanum, which are all crowned with an Ionic capital. A , which are adorned with a , can be seen above most of the columns. The building is embellished with several impressive statues that perdict an eagle. Above the main entrance doors, you can admire five containing an icon perdicting histoical rulers.
