Grand Hotel Continental

On the plot, on which the current building was built, the building of the Brofft Hotel used to stand. The hotel was bought in the 1880s by the Jewish banker, industrialist, philanthropist, and adviser to Prince , . Due to construction defects that caused some conflicts with the City Hall, after several delays, Elias demolished the Brofft Hotel and built a new hotel in its place. The newly built residential and commercial building, which was constructed according to the project of the Austrian architect , was built in the period between 1885 and 1886. The upper floor became in use the hotel with the name Grand Hotel Continental and the first floor housed luxury shops. The hotel had its own restaurant, with French cuisine, and in 1900, one of the first bars in Bucharest opened here, which was named the Luncheon-Bar. After 1944 the hotel was assigned to the Ministry of Tourism which consolidated it in 1979.
The Brofft Hotel
One of the corners of the Neo-Renaissance building is determined with a majestic bell-shaped dome, which is adorned with and , and topped with a lantern tower. A segmental is placed above the fourth floor windows, which are flanked by even more cartouches and embellished with . Between the fourth and third floors, you can see a adorned with , as well as a frieze adorned with floral ornamentation, including . The beautifully decorated , which stretch all the way up from the second until the third floor, are all adorned with a Corinthian and decorated with floral ornamentation and a . A lovely lion head is placed underneath almost all of the pilasters. A is placed above the third floor windows, while a segmental pediment embellished with a decorative shell is placed above the second floor windows.
