Karl Deutsch Shop

- Strada Vasile Alecsandri 4 -
The construction of the two-story building, which was built in the period that lasted from 1906 until 1910, was executed by either the Hungarian architect or Hungarian architect . It was built for the merchant Karl Ignaz Deutsch, whose father Simon Deutsch moved to Oradea from Moravia somewhere in the 1850s. In 1877, Karel took over the one-story glassware store, owned by János Sonnenfeld, which was located at the same address. In 1900, Deutsch’s company started a business with the glass and porcelain factory from the Black Forest, becoming the main distributor in the markets of Transylvania, the Balkans, and Austria. In 1909, he bought the Black Forest Glass Factory and from 1913 it took over the production line from the glass factory. Until the , the members of the Deutsch family were among the most wealthy people from Oradea. From 1940, the store sold exclusively porcelain items produced in Hungary, and in the 1960s the shop was transformed and became the children’s store with the name Gulliver. In 1970, for safety reasons, the building was demolished, with the exception of the facade, and was rebuilt from reinforced concrete.
