Baron Bohuș Palace

The four-story building, which was constructed in the period between 1911 and 1913, was built with commercial premises on the first floor and residential premises on the upper three floors. It was built at the command of Baron Bohuș, in place of another two-story building owned by him, which only took up a part of the land. The construction was executed according to the design that was created by the Romanian-Hungarian architect . The palace was Arad’s first building to use central heating and reinforced concrete floors. It was also one of the first of its period to incorporate full-functioning elevators.
The two-story building that stood on its place
During the interwar period, the most important bank in Arad, the Banca Românească, operated on the first floor, with a corner entrance. It was the commercial bank that supported local industry and held shares in the main factories. Later on, the famous tailor, Mănase Ghinga, also famous for his collaboration with the painter Sever Frentiu, had his workshop in the building. Also, the shop of Bérczi Pál, the president of the Credit Cooperative of Arădeni Industrialists, specialized in leather goods, was operating in the building for some time.
