Shteryu Vaptsarov House

The one-story building was originally built for residential purposes at the end of the 19th century for Shteryu Vaptsarov, who was born in 1848 in Haskovo. He was a descendant of an old artisan family, he learned the tailoring trade in and became a famous fashion tailor of European clothes in Haskovo. As a participant in the national liberation struggles he was arrested by the Ottoman authorities and sent to the prison. After the was declared, he emigrated to Romania, where he enlisted in the Bulgarian militia. Due to tuberculosis, he was sent to a hospital in , and after his health improved, he was transferred to the Seventh Company. After a serious deterioration, on August 11, 1877, he was dismissed from the Russian army. After the of Bulgaria, from 1896 until 1899, the became the mayor of Haskovo.

After the death of Shteryu Vaptsarov, on November 13, 1899, the house was bought by a Jewish family, and later it became in use by the Septemvri Cinema. In 1998, the Haskovo Art Gallery, which was founded in 1962, moved into the building.
