A national competition for the construction of the cultural multi-story building was announced in May 1890 and was won by the Hungarian architects and . The construction works began on June 3, 1893, with the demolition of the former Dominican Monastery, and lasted until 1895. The external sculptural and decorative elements were made by the artists and workers of the Factory. The city tried to raise the money needed for construction by levying an additional tax and collecting donations, but it was not successful, so they took out a loan. It was originally supposed to be handed over in 1894, but due to construction difficulties, the handing over was delayed by a year, and the theater opened its doors to the public on October 5, 1895. After the theater building's deterioration worsened, it was closed on June 5, 1986, and renovated in the coming five years and was completed in June 1991.

The majestic dome on top of the Eclectic building is crowned with a statue perdicting , which was created by the Hungarian sculptor . The part just under the statue is lavishly decorated with adorned with a lion head , , and foliage. The on the northern side of the building features the Greek god riding a drawn by a lion, as well as several . This side also shows five statues of Appolo's , two of which are placed in a , as well as busts showing the cultural figures , , , and . The that can be seen underneath the tympanum, which is supported by four massive columns crowned with a Composite , features an stating Hungarian National Theater.

The other domes, which in some cases are placed on top of the , are all crowned with a . The tympanums that are located on the western and eastern sides of the building contain the year of construction in Roman numerals. The ornamentation on the second floor consists of crowned with an Ionic capital, swan neck , several cartouches, and a plaque in honor of the architects who designed the building. On this floor, you can also see a that runs along the entire northern facade, which is supported by loads of and secured with a beautifully decorated stone balustrade. The ornamentation on the first floor mainly consists of cartouches and , but also two lovely fragments that flank the main entrance door.
