Rudolf Maister House

The large three-story corner building, which was constructed according to the design that came from the hand of architect Vladimir Walter, was built in 1890. It's unknown who commissioned its construction, but it's known that it was inhabited by the Slovene military officer, poet, and political activist, Rudolf Maister, also known by his pen name Vojanov. He was born on March 29, 1874, in , and at first, he attended primary school where he was an excellent student. In 1885, he began attending the Carniola Junior High School where he graduated in 1890. In 1894, he completed his officer studies in the home defense cadetship in . After completing his cadetship, he was included in the Home Guard battalion in , and on October 1, 1894, he was transferred to the infantry regiment in . During the , he served in the Austro-Hungarian Army, and in 1917, he was sent to where he was promoted to the rank of major. In 1918, near the end of the war when it was obvious that Austria-Hungary was losing, the city council of proclaimed the annexation of Maribor to Austria. Rudolf Maister organized Slovene volunteer forces of 4000 soldiers and 200 officers and on the night of November 23, 1918, seized control of the city of Maribor and the surrounding region of Lower Styria. From 1921 to 1923, General Maister was chairman of the Yugoslav Commission to regulate the border with Italy. On 2 October 1923, he was forced to retire with the rank of divisional general.

Rudolf Maister also wrote poetry, which he published in two collected volumes in 1904 and 1929. Most of his poetry follows Post-Romantic aesthetics, and it is influenced by the 19th-century Slovene lyrical and patriotic poetry.

Rudolf Maister was married to Marija Sterger, born in 1885, in Ljubljana in 1905. In addition to the eighth-grade primary school, Marija completed a three-year girls secondary school. She achieved an enviable level of education and knowledge of languages, which later helped her in social and cultural life. Her father was a prominent Ljubljana doctor, Doctor Stanko Sterger. He helped the newlyweds cover a deposit, which was required of officers upon marriage by Austro-Hungarian military regulations. Marija and Rudolf had two sons, Hrvoj born in 1905, and Borut born in 1908. Rudolf Maister died on July 26, 1934, in , at the age of 60.

The corner of the Eclectic building is determined by an , which is supported by two and covered by a dome that's crowned with a . In addition to the strip of , underneath the roof , you can also see some and corbels adorned with foliage. More dentils are used to decorate the pointed , while more cartouches are used to decorate the sides of the oriel window. The building features many and columns, which are either crowned with a Doric or Ionic . A is placed above a lot of windows, some of which are adorned with a cartouche or acanthus foliage. The two broken pointed pediments that are placed above the two entrance doors feature a decorative vase in the broken part of the pediment. Also, the underneath some of the windows, and the stone blocks decorated by on the first floor contribute to the beauty of the building.
