Grand Hotel Union

The four-story building, which was constructed in the period that lasted from 1904 until 1905, was built with a residential and commercial function. At the initiative of the Slovenian doctor, businessman, and politician , the plans for the hotel were drawn up by the Austro-Hungarian architect from . In addition to the exterior, the architect Vancaš also took care of the rich decoration of the interior. The construction was led by the construction company of the Slovenian builder and entrepreneur . The hotel was part of a program of urban reconstruction during the administration of Mayor , initiated in the aftermath of the major 1895 that destroyed much of Ljubljana's medieval structures. The grand opening of the hotel, which lasted seven days, took place on October 28, 1905.

The Grand Hotel Union was one of the largest and most modern hotels in the south-eastern part of Europe. It had 87 rooms, a modern restaurant, a cafe, a large concert hall, a bowling alley, and several halls for ceremonial events. It also had an elevator, central heating, and a telephone, which was a real rarity at the time. In the past, many well-known personalities from the world of politics, film, and music, as well as members of royal families, including the British Queen , have stayed overnight.

A huge majestic dome, as well as three smaller domes, all of which are crowned with a , determine the top of the building, which is built in the Art Nouveau style. The parts that can be seen around the same height are lavishly decorated with , , ornamental laurel leaves, , and motifs. The areas around the windows are richly decorated with all kinds of floral decorations, including sunflowers and even more laurel leaves.
