Carinthia State Museum

The foundation stone for the construction of the three-story building, which was built with an educational function, was laid on April 24, 1879. The building, which was constructed according to the plan of the Austrian architect , opened its doors to the public on July 10, 1884. The capstone in the stairway was laid by Crown Prince , which is why the museum is also referred to as Rudolfinum. It was built for the Carinthia State Museum, which was considered founded in 1844, as it was the same year the History Association for Carinthia was founded. The association carried out scientific research and the establishment of a library as well as a presentation of cultural-historical exhibits in the Klagenfurt Landhaus. During the , the building was heavily damaged by bombs dropped during the on Klagenfurt. After the war, it was rebuilt with state funds, and the cultural and natural science show collections were newly set up.

On top of the building, which is built in the style of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Classical, you can admire a lot of adorned with . The same counts for the roof , which also contains an additional strip of dentils. The frieze is lavishly embellished with , as well as some stating Landesmuseum. The , which stretch all the way up from the second until the third floor and the ones that flank the third floor windows, are all crowned with an Ionic , while the ones flanking the second floor windows are crowned with a Doric one. A , as well as two adorned with festoons and garland wreaths, are placed above the third floor windows. A is placed underneath the third and second floor windows, which all contain a total of five . The frieze that's located between the third and second floors is decorated with and adorned with . A huge amount of stone blocks that are used to build up the first floor, are decorated with , which contrasts nicely with the straight-plastered upper floors.
