Villa Gheorghe Baiulescu

The construction of the two-story building, which was built with a residential function that later changed into a commercial and an educational function, started in 1888 and was completed in 1889. The land on which it was built was bought in 1886 by the president of the Chamber of Commerce, the merchant Manole Diamandi, who was born in 1833. He bought the land and the old bastion, which was left in ruins, from the city authorities, and demolished the old bastion in 1887. After the demolition of the old bastion, Diamandi gave the land as a dowry to his daughter, who got married to Doctor George Baiulescu, the first Romanian mayor in 1916, and the first prefect of the county, in 1919.

Gheorghe Baiulescu, who was born on July 9, 1855, in Brașov, had a beautiful villa built according to the project of the local architect , which he later sold to the Austro-Hungarian authorities, who used it as the prefect's residence. After the in 1918, the Chamber of Agriculture, the Library, and the ASTRA Museum functioned in this building. Before the , the building was called the ASTRA Palace, named after the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Culture of the Romanian People. Later on, the building became the house of a section of the George Baritiu County Library as well as the French Alliance and the Honorary Consulate of France in Brașov.
