Benkner Family House

The two-story building, which houses commercial premises on the first floor and residential premises on the second floor, was built way back in the 15th century. It was built for the Benkner family, whose tree back as far as the 13th century. The first demonstrably existing member of the family was Christian Benkner, a town councilor who lived at the end of the 15th century. Christian's son, Johannes Benkner Senior, was town captain and later town judge for eight years; for his merits, the king raised him twice to the rank of noble. His son, Johannes Benkner Junior was also a city judge, the founder of the Brașov paper mill, and a supporter of . Between 1533 and 1539, it was mentioned as the property of Peter Benkner and Michael Benkner, and after the , the building was rebuilt. In the 19th century, several Benkners were mentioned as city officials, pastors, and chroniclers, and the last Benkner from Brașov died in 1979. Between 1835 and 1841, the Romanian Casino Cultural Association from Brașov was based here. In the 1870s it came into the possession of the Plecker von Pleckersfeld family and later became the residence of the Schobel von Schobeln family. The building underwent a large-scale renovation in 1872 in which it got its current form.
