Samuel Schiel House

The impressive three-story building, which was constructed somewhere at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, was built with a residential function. It was built for the wealthy industrialist Samuel Schiel, who was born on October 29, 1857, in Kronstadt, nowadays Brașov. After completing an apprenticeship as a locksmith in 1874, he attended the technical center in with his brother Karl and was trained as a mechanical engineer. Samuel was involved in the founding of a workshop for the processing of cast iron parts in Kronstadt in 1880. In 1882, they opened a paper factory in and a timber factory in , and after the death of his brother in 1894, he took over the business and was able to significantly increase their production.

In 1904 the company built a pulp factory, and between 1905 and 1913, the company was constantly expanded. Installation of additional paper machines and the establishment of modern power centers to cover the ever-growing energy requirements were built. From 1909 onwards the transport of wood from the leased forests in the Bucegi Mountains was made possible by a cable car. In 1913, production had risen, as well as the number of workers Samuel built up an extensive social and cultural infrastructure. The factory suffered severe damage in 1916 during the , but Samuel began rebuilding it in 1917 with the help of his sons and nephews. Samuel Schiel passed away on August 13, 1944, in Brașov, and was buried in the Evangelical cemetery.

The geologist, archaeologist, and paleontologist, Doctor Emil Jekelius, who lived from 1889 until 1970, also lived in the building for a period of time.

The most defining parts of the Eclectic building are the and the , both of which are covered with a dome that's crowned with a . Underneath the , you can, in addition to , which are also used to embellish the roof cornice, also see some other ornamentation, including and . Above some of the third floor windows, you can admire a shield-shaped ornament and straight supported by cylindrical . More corbels are used to support the oriel window, as well as the two wide balconies. The remaining ornamentation consists of even more , as well as even more shield-shaped ornaments, one of which contains the initials of the former owner.
