Brașov Council House

In the 14th century, there was a watchtower at this place, which kept an eye on the neighborhood and the fairs held in the spacious square. The Szűcs guild built a covered stone gallery next to the tower, and then in 1420, a new level was built on top of this building for the town council. The on April 21, which destroyed a large part of Brașov's buildings, also seriously affected the Council House. Due to the difficult financial situation of the city, only the strictly necessary repairs could be made, which were finished in 1691. The complete reconstruction of the building took almost a century and extensive works to restore the building took place between 1770 and 1778. Between 1835 and 1837, the attic rooms were built and the roof was renovated. In 1870, gas lighting was introduced to the building, and in 1874, the city scale was installed. At the end of the 19th century, the building proved to be too small for the city administration, and in 1878, the town hall moved to a new purpose-built building.

In 1902, it was proposed to demolish it, but as a result of a signature collection organized by the newspaper the Kronstädter Zeitung, the authorities abandoned the plan in 1903. After the and the establishment of communism, it was proposed to demolish the Council House in order to create more space in the Council Square for workers' demonstrations. A team of architects helped by the academician managed to convince the communist regime not to demolish the building. Starting from 1950, the Brașov State Museum functioned in the Council House, which later became the Brașov County History Museum, with permanent and temporary exhibitions.

The clock tower of the Baroque building is covered with black and yellow colored tiles that contain four dormers topped with a . A lantern tower is part of the roof, which is topped with an onion dome that again is crowned with a finial. The clock that is now in the tower dates from 1892, which looks similar to its predecessor was brought in Germany, and has dials on all four sides. The dormers that are placed within the mansard roof are all topped with a pointed . In addition to a , the top gable is also decorated with various decorative vases and an impressive coat of arms of the city of Brașov. Underneath the top gable, you can see spectacular and several , which are abundantly present around the entire building.
