The three-story building, which was built for residential and commercial purposes, was constructed in a period that lasted from 1904 until 1907. It was built for the master butcher Béla Bányai, who commissioned its construction to the Hungarian master builder Pál Soós and its design to the Hungarian architect Győző Nagy. It was built on a plot where the ruins of the burned-down houses used to stand, which were affected by the fire that broke out in an annex of the . Between 1933 and 1937, the building served as the home of Mayor György Bernády, after he sold his villa in the neighborhood Cornişa to beer brewer .
György Bernády
György Bernády was born on April 10, 1864, in , in the family of the apothecary, Dániel Bernády. He started his studies in Marosvásárhely, nowadays Târgu Mureș, and completed his studies in . He served as mayor of Marosvásárhely for two periods, which lasted from 1900 until 1912 and from 1926 until 1929. In these periods, the City Hall and the Cultural Palace were both built, as well as many schools, libraries, and art galleries. His name is associated with public illumination and sewerage in the city. He had a daughter named Györgyike, who was born in 1919 from his fourth marriage, but he lost her at a young age, already after 17 years. Not soon after the death of his daughter, on October 22, 1938, György Bernády also died, but at the age of 74.
