The first attempt at the construction of the three-story building, which was built for cultural purposes, was in the early 1930s, but in connection with the , its construction was postponed. In the years between 1949 and 1953, the project was finished, under the direction of the architect Sofia Galadjeva, under the direction of the architects of the Soviet Union, Smirnov and Alexandrov, with the preservation of the interwar forms and stylistics. On October 10, 1920, at the initiative of a group of local intelligentsia and public activists led by the minister of Bessarabia in the Romanian government, , the first stationary Romanian theater in Bessarabia was founded in Chișinău. Since 1994, the theater bears the name of the Romanian Romantic poet, novelist, and journalist from Moldavia, .
