Leopold Pfeiffer Palace

- Ulica Kapucinska 17 -
The building, which was constructed on a corner plot for residential purposes with a total of two stories, was built in 1890. The construction was commissioned by the Osijek landowner Leopold Carl Pfeiffer, who gave the order for the design to the architects Materna and Despot. Leopold was born in 1834 in the Hungarian city of and became a nobleman in 1909 by receiving the title of baron with the nickname Orlovnjački. The epithet of the baronial title to Pfeiffer derives from the name of the wasteland Orlovnjak near Osijek, which he bought from the heir of Baron Ivan Kapistran Adamović. On this wasteland, Pfeiffer intensified agricultural and livestock production by introducing a network of canals and irrigation, and by building industrial facilities from a brickyard to a mill to a button and comb factory. The family name is still known for the pigs that were created by crossing pig breeds on this estate in the 19th century. Leopold Carl Pfeiffer passed away in Osijek in 1913.
