Hotel Royal

The construction of the outstanding three-story building, which lasted in the period that lasted from 1904 until 1905, was executed according to a project of the builder , who created the design in 1903. On the plot on which it was built, a one-story Baroque building with a prominent porch used to stand here, which served as the county palace. The newly built building, which was built with both a residential and a commercial function, was built to house Hotel Royal. The order for the construction was given by the local tailor Mijo Rajal, who was born in 1852 in . He economically strengthened himself so much that he was able to finance the construction of a large luxury hotel in the very center of Osijek.

The first floor of the hotel housed a large restaurant with a large hotel garden with a terrace, a cafe with a summer garden, and an Art Nouveau cinema hall. The multifunctional restaurant was also used for concerts, balls, and cinematographic screenings, which after the end of the was fully adapted for cinematographic projections. The owner of the hotel originally named the hotel after his own family name, Rajal, and later the name was changed to Royal, as it was more common. The hotel changed tenants several times and the building was neglected for a long time, but renovation plans were announced in 2022.

The symmetrical building is a beautiful mix of all sorts of styles, including Historicism, Eclectic, and Art Nouveau. In the center of the scaly sheet metal mansard roof, you'll see a that contains dormers and a lantern that's crowned with a . Around the same height, you can see two top gables, which are richly decorated with , , an motif, that are either crowned with an Ionic or Corinthian , as well as a , and a segmental . The top gables also feature several that just like several other balconets are incorporated with . Underneath the spire, you can see a , which is secured with a wrought iron railing, which also counts for some other balconets. Above the doors that are located in the loggia, you can see a containing a bust and , which are adorably decorated.
The roof is supported by several and adorned with another egg-and-dart motif, as well as ornaments that are embellished with volutes and foliage. The capitals that are placed on top of the largest pilasters, as well as the parts underneath the segmental pediments, feature a . All of the that are located underneath the third floor windows are enriched with , while only a few are also enriched with volutes. Above the , you can admire keystones that are connected to lion head by means of a .
