Béla Barabás House

The two-story residential corner building, which was constructed somewhere in the 1870s, was most likely built by the engineer Lajos Virágh, who was the city engineer at that time. The construction was commissioned by the carpenter Péter Barabás and later owned by his son the lawyer, public writer, member of parliament, and senator Béla Barabás. He was born in Arad, on December 12, 1855, and started his studies at the Unitarian Gymnasium in . In 1879, he graduated in law at the University of , later on, he became the leader of the Independence and Forty-Eight Party in Arad, and in 1892 a member of the Hungarian Parliament. In 1914, he accompanied Prime Minister on his trip to America. From July 25, 1917, until November 5, 1918, he was the mayor of the city of Arad with legal authority. After the and the annexation of Transylvania to the Kingdom of Romania, he decided to stay in Arad and quickly became one of the leading figures in minority Hungarian political life. From 1922 he was one of the vice-presidents of the Transylvanian Hungarian National Party. Besides his work as a politician, he carried out significant journalistic activities in national and local newspapers. Béla Barabás died on May 28, 1934, in Arad, at the age of 78.

The tower-like structure on the corner of the Neo-Renaissance building is covered with a dome that features a lantern tower that's crowned with a . The dormers within the dome, as well as the two larger ones, are topped with a pointed . The two larger dormers are placed within a swan neck pediment, and around the same height, you'll be able to see a broken pointed pediment with a decorative vase in its midst. The latter pediments are part of the roof which is supported by many that are part of . Above the second floor windows, in addition to a , you can see another pointed pediment under which there are . The latter also counts for the straight pediments that are placed above the first floor windows. An adorned with can be admired underneath some of the windows, and underneath some of the other windows, a with incorporated can be seen. On the corner of the building, you can admire some columns and that are crowned with an Ionic , as well as a and a beautifully decorated containing a coat of arms.
