Neumann Family House

- Strada Horia 8 -
The one-story building was built in the period that lasted from 1925 until 1926 by the order of the Neumann family. The first members of the Neuman family, Adolf, Daniel, and Samuilă, arrived in Arad in the middle of the 19th century and founded a small distillery in 1851 on the outskirts of the city, which soon became a real factory, which expanded in 1862 with a steam mill. The economic development of the following years was cleverly exploited by the brothers, who also opened a branch in . The fame of the Arad industrial growth throughout the Empire aroused the curiosity of Emperor , who came to see it in 1884. Following the visit, the sovereign granted the family the noble rank, and the certificate granting the title of baron to all family members was issued in September 1913, signed by Emperor Franz Joseph I and Prime Minister . Arad benefited enormously from the rise and consolidation of the Neuman family, the industrialists being among the biggest taxpayers.

Foreseeing the hard days to come for the Jews in other countries of Europe, not only in Nazi Germany, the family members began to emigrate to the United States of America in 1938, also transferring part of their wealth. The last to remain was Adolf's nephew Francis, who was the last inhabitant of the house. Francis went to England, and after his return to Arad after the Second World War, in 1947, he was arrested by the communists, who released him a few months before nationalization and advised him to leave the country as quickly as possible. He went to Switzerland, and after a period in which he lived in Austria, he emigrated to the United States of America, where he died in 1996. After the nationalization, the property became the protocol villa of the family. After the fall of the communist regime, for a while, the house became the property of the Arad County Council, and in 2000, it returned to Francis Neumann's heirs.
