Plavšić-Gottschalk House

- Ulica Stjepana Radića 16 -
The two-story residential building was built in 1900 according to the plans of the Austrian architect and builder , who was also responsible for the remodeling of the building in 1911. The construction was executed for Ruža Plavšić, who was the second wife of Nikola Atanasijev Plavšić, the longtime secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and Crafts for Slavonia, who was born in in 1848. After the death of his wife Ljudmila, on January 14, 1892, with whom he had four children, he married Ruža Zirner, for whom he built this house as a gift.

Later on, it became the property of Doctor Franjo Gottschalk, who was born in Osijek in 1847 as the son of a glovemaker. He studied medicine at the University of , and after the completion of his studies, he served as a doctor in the Croatian Navy. After his retirement from the Navy in 1883, he returned to Osijek, where he opened a private medical practice. He was a great benefactor and supporter of cultural institutions, especially the theater. Given that he had no children with both of his wives, he bequeathed all his property to charity after his death on March 9, 1929. The money from this foundation was intended for the care of poor fellow citizens, so most of the funds were used to expand the Osijek City Almshouse.
