Jewish School

The construction of the educational corner building, which was designed in 1899 by the Austrian architect and builder , was completed in 1900. The building was built as a Jewish school and community building, and since its completion, it has been the most important building for the social, cultural, and religious life of Osijek Jews, but also very important in city life in general. From 1929 to 1932, Doctor , the future rabbi of , served as a rabbi and teacher in Osijek. Jews are mentioned already in the third century in the Roman settlement of Mursa in the area of ​​today's Osijek. Until the , Jews made up almost ten percent of the city's population, until August 1942, when the Independent State of Croatia authorities imprisoned them in the concentration camp and deported them to and , where almost all of them disappeared.

For the decoration of the building, which is the first Art Nouveau ever built in Osijek, much use is made of motifs, , and geometric and floral decorations. A straight is placed above the windows, some of which are supported by , of which some are embellished with . Above some of the same windows, you'll either see a or a surrounded by floral decorations. The that flank most of the windows are crowned with a that's adorned with foliage.
