Ivan Lazarov House

The residential building was built in the period between 1912 and 1913 and was designed by the Bulgarian architect . It was built for the Bulgarian sculptor and academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Ivan Stefanov Lazarov, who inhabited the building until his death. He was born on October 2, 1889, in and graduated from the State Art and Industrial School in 1912 under Professor . In 1917, he specializes at the Academy of Fine Arts in and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in , as a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Education.

In 1919, he became a painting teacher in Sofia, and later a sculpture teacher at the State Academy of Arts and Professor in 1924. In the 1930s he was elected rector of the State Academy of Arts and remained so until 1945. After the coup on in 1944, he was imprisoned and spent four days in a water-filled cell up to his ankles. He was released by academician . In 1949 he founded the Institute of Fine Arts at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and was its director for the rest of his life. Ivan Lazarov died on November 4, 1952, in Sofia at the age of 63.

The mint green building was built in Eclectic and Neo-Baroque style. The most eye-catching feature of this building is the semi-hexagonal . The balcony on top of it is secured with a wrought iron railing. The many geometric forms of the give the oriel window additional depth. The and the , which can be seen underneath the roof , are richly decorated. The cornice, which is located above the window on the second floor, is adorned with a decorated ornament.

The two balconies above the main entrance door are also equipped with a wrought iron railing. The corbels, on which the balconies rest are beautifully decorated with a lion head, a decorative shell and foliage. The richly decorated above the main entrance door contains the construction period and the inscription С.Л. (S.L.). The sculpture of a woman that sits on the stairs is a reduced copy of the one which is placed in 1934 at the tombstone of in the town of .
