Vojtech Spanyol House

The oldest known form of the two-story residential and commercial building is from 1779 when it was owned by the Tamáš family. Ján Tamáš was one of them, who was the mayor of Žilina, and another member was a writer. In the 18th century, the house housed a wine shop. The history of the Krušpier family and the well-known Spanyol family are also connected with the history of the house. The Spanyol family owned the house until 1917 and from this family came Doctor Vojtech Spanyol, who was the founder of the Žilina Eye Hospital. After the , there was a bookstore here for more than 20 years.

Vojtech Spanyol was a Slovak ophthalmologist, who was born on October 15, 1883, in Žilina, in the Jewish family of Gabriel Spanyol and Rozália, maiden name Freundová. He studied at the gymnasium in Žilina, in , and in , where he graduated in 1902. He also graduated in medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of , where in 1907 he obtained the doctorate Doctor of Medicine. He remained in Hungary working at two different eye clinics, first in Budapest, and later in , where he gained experience. In 1911, he returned to Budapest where he managed to obtain funds for the construction of a hospital in Žilina. After the completion of the hospital in 1914, he became the head of the eye department and at the same time the director of the State Hospital in Žilina. He continued to expand his skills and abilities in ophthalmology until he was responsible for eliminating trachoma in Kysucie. At the same time, he also became the founder of stations focused on the prevention of this disease. He was the founder and director of the Žilina School of Ophthalmology. Despite the problems with his racial affiliation and political beliefs during the Second World War, when he retired, he led the hospital until 1962 and was also responsible for its further development, not only within the eye department. Vojtech Spanyol died on September 17, 1980, Žilina.

The top of the Neo-Renaissance building is determined by a top gable, which is separated by the rest of the building with an eave under which are placed that are adorned with foliage. Above the second floor windows, you can see two fragments adorned with floral decorations, as well as a pointed , which is supported by two embellished with acanthus foliage. Underneath these windows, another fragment can be seen, which in this case is adorned with geometric forms and a . The first floor consists of an that continues to the surrounding buildings.
