Varna Railway Station

The first Varna railway station opened its door on 26 October 1866, when the Varna- railway line was inaugurated. The present building was constructed between 1908 and 1925, and was officially opened on March 3, 1925 by Tsar . The station building was built in several stages under the supervision of the Bulgarian architects Nikola Kostov and . The construction was slowed down and virtually halted because of the , the , and the .

In 1929, a clock mechanism was specially delivered from Germany and was installed in the clock tower of the building. In 1939 the sheds on the platforms were built and only in 1952 the station was completed internally. In 2004 and 2005 a process of reconstruction of the station building and the square around it took place.

Between 1883 and 1885 the Varna railway station was one of the stations where the used to stop.

The building was designed in the Art Nouveau style with some elements of Neo-Baroque. The most striking part of the building is the clock tower that towers high above the building. The tower is crowned with a bell shaped dome with a on top of it. On each of the four sides of the tower, you'll be able to see a clock, as well as a small balcony. The clocks are surrounded by a beautiful garland and are flanked by two each. The technique of is applied to the of the tower, as well as in many other places.

Next to the tower, you'll see one of the entrances to the railway station. The huge open segmental is adorned with and an motif. The within the pediment states ЖП ГАРА ВАРНА (Railway Station Varna). In between the windows you can see two ornaments that are decorated with relief, garlands, and . A little bit further down there's a huge that's supported by six .

On the north side of the building, there's another entrance, which is crowned with a majestic dome. The dome itself is decorated with two spires, , and guttae. In front of the dome, you'll see a that ends into a with above it a . This entrance is also covered by a huge awning, which in this case is supported by eight corbels. The above some of the windows are either adorned with a lion head or a male .
