Stefan Kalpakchiev House

- Han Kubrat Square 4 -
The residential and commercial building was built in 1905 according to a project of the Bulgarian architect Todor Petrov. It was built for the needs of the Kalpakchiev family, who were known for their export of leather and hats to Romania. One of the family members, Stefan Kalpakchiev, was registered as the owner of the company in 1915. Together with his partner, Stoycho Pankov, they were involved in the production and trade of military and school hats. In the 1930s, a number of hat-making associations emerged in Ruse, such as the Hatting Industry Ltd. The work of independent companies in this branch became increasingly difficult, and at the end of 1938, the company of Stefan Kalpakchiev and Stoycho Pankov ceases its activities.

In the late 1930s, the Abadjievi brothers bought the building. They were merchants in military clothing, they opened a large shop for fine wool and silk fabrics, English satin, blankets, and more. The Abadjievi family consisted of six brothers and two sisters. The eldest brother Petar was married to Zdravka Kiskineva and together they had four children, Pencho, Dancho, Verka, and Filip. The other brother Grigor Abadjiev and the two sisters Vesa and Andoni lived with their families in Ruse. The other brother Mosko Abadjiev settled in Bucharest, and the other three brothers Jordan, Boris, and Marin moved to . After the death of Petar Abadjiev in 1952, the house was sold and his wife Zdravka went to Sofia together with one of her daughters.
