Avram Ventura House

- Borisova Street 44 -
The residential building, which was built in 1915, was designed by the architect Vasil Roglev. The first owner was the chairman of the Jewish Society and manufacturer Avram Ventura. He was the father of the member of the Zionist organization Maccabi, Ana Ventura, who was born in 1925, in Ruse. After she left the French College, she went underground and became one of the great leaders of the resistance in the Ruse region. Her father was arrested and he was brutally interrogated into betraying his daughter, but he did not know where she was. In the winter of 1944, Ana Ventura hid in the Metropol Hotel but was betrayed by her hairdresser. Police found her at the hotel and shot her there.

In 1938, Avram Ventura sold the building to the banker Obreten Dobrev, who worked at the Ruse Popular Bank. He was one of the few sworn expert accountants at the time. He had two daughters, who were both dentists and had a dental practice in this building.

The most eye-catching feature of the Art Nouveau building is the semi-octagonal and the protruded part of the facade above it. This protruded part is embellished with two garlands and a decorative shell. Next to this protruded part, you'll be able to see a scaly sheet metal mansard roof, which includes two dormers. The building is richly decorated with unusual ornaments that are embellished with whiplash lines and beautiful natural forms.
