Stefan Slavchev House

The residential building was constructed in 1910 and was built for the Bulgarian officer Stefan Stefanov Slavchev, who was born on December 7, 1869, in . In 1889, he graduated from the Military School in Sofia, and on May 18 he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. In 1896 he graduated from the artillery engineering application school in . During the , he was the commander of the heavy fortress artillery in the Third Army, which was manifested in the attack on the fortress. In 1914, with the rank of colonel, he was appointed head of the technical department in the Artillery Inspection. During the , he commanded a heavy artillery brigade in the first Army and then was Chief of Artillery at the Headquarters of the Active Army. On August 9, 1919, he was discharged from the army and enlisted in the reserve.

Stefan Slavchev was married to Elisa Andreeva Slavcheva, who was the daughter of the famous French entrepreneur . Major General Stefan Slavchev died on June 30, 1965, in Sofia, at the age of 95.

Their daughter Radka Stefanova Slavcheva and their son-in-law Georgi Konstantinov Lipovanski also lived in the building. Georgi, who was a deputy and lawyer was sentenced to death by the People's Court in 1944. Radka Lipovanska remained a widow with a son, Konstantin who was 20 years old, and her daughter, Eliza, who was 13 years old at that time. Later on, the property was inhabited by their grandson, the artist Georgi Lipovanski, creator of the lion cub, the symbol of the political party Union of Democratic Forces, and director of the National Gallery of Foreign Art.

The professor from the , Marin Varbanov, and his wife, the Chinese artist Sun Huai Kuei, who are famous all over the world for their tapestries, lived in an apartment on the first floor.

The mansard roof of the building that's built in the styles of Eclectic and Neo-Baroque, is covered by red roof tiles and contains many dormers that are adorned with an ornamental peacock tail, as well as a . The top gable, which is embellished with a , is topped with a spiky-shaped with a on top of it. A bit further down, you'll be able to see a with underneath it a strip of . Above the second floor windows, which are flanked by that are crowned with a Doric , you can admire a swan neck pediment. The and the window frames on the first floor give the building a nice multidimensional touch. On the east side of the building, you can see two beautifully decorated wrought iron that are lavishly decorated with . The that covers the entrance to the balcony is also decorated with volutes, but also with some . The main entrance door, which can be reached through a wrought iron gate, is covered by a .
