Iliya Zurkov House

The residential building was built in 1896 by French and Belgians who arrived for the construction of the new port. In 1911, it was bought by the pharmacist, public figure and benefactor, Iliya Nikolov Zurkov, who was born in 1875 in the town of . His father Nikola Kanchov Zurkov was a reader, singer, and priest at the local church, but passed away early in his life. He was raised by his mother Petra and his older sisters. First, he studied in his hometown, then in Tanovo, nowadays , and later went to study pharmacy at the oldest university in and finished his education in 1899 and settled in Burgas. In 1900, he started working in the pharmacy of , of which he later became the manager. In the same year, the Yunak company was founded in the city, and Iliya Zurkov became an active participant in its activities for 40 years. For 15 years, he was the chairman, and later the honorary chairman of the company. In 1906, he opened his drugstore in Burgas called Drogeria Zurkov, which sells various medicinal products, perfumes and cosmetics, and he became a distributor of the world-famous pharmaceutical companies.

Besides being a pharmacist, he was also one of the founders and chairman of the Burgas Trade Company, as well as a long-time member of the Burgas Chamber of Commerce and Industry. For 27 years he chaired the Association of Druggists in Bulgaria. In November 1911, he was the initiator and chairman of the creation of the music society called Native Sounds, which founded the Symphony Orchestra and the Music School in Burgas. He is among the founders of the Rotary Club, which was established in 1937. He died on March 14, 1950, in Burgas.

The red bricks and the white plaster of the Art Nouveau building gives the building a nice contrasting feeling. The scaly sheet mansard roof contains many dormers and is surrounded by a cast iron railing. A so called eyebrow , which is supported by two , is placed above the windows on the second floor. The curved balcony, which is located on the southeastern corner of the building, is secured with a beautifully decorated wrought iron railing. The balcony is supported by four corbels, which are adorned with and foliage. The windows on the first floor are flanked by , which are crowned with a Doric . The segmental cornice, which can be seen above the circle top windows, contain a that contains a stone block that is decorated with the technique of .
