Burgas Synagogue

The construction of the religious building started in 1905 and was completed in 1909. It was built according to a project of the Italian architect for the Jewish community. After the , seeing the great opportunities for trade that the small port of Burgas provided, the first Jew settled here, who was an orange merchant from . In just 20 years, dozens of Jewish families from , and Stara Zagora moved to Burgas. The Jews were trading in raw hides, hardware, wool and woolen fabrics, shoemaking, colonial and glassware, and earned a lot of money.

In order to satisfy this need of having a house of prayer, the rich grain merchant Celebi Presenti donated a huge plot of land for the construction of the synagogue. After its completion, it quickly became the spiritual heart of the local community. At the beginning of the , Bulgaria joined the . In 1942, the freedoms of Bulgarian Jews were limited, and after the adoption of the Fascist Law for the Protection of the Nation, their lives changed radically.

After the coup in 1944, most of the Burgas Jews resettled again, this time to Israel. The communist regime nationalized the Synagogue on April 7, 1947, and was converted into an art gallery. During the reconstruction, most of the decorative decorations of the interior was destroyed and the frescoes were plastered over, and the stained glass windows, chandeliers, and furniture were removed.

The symmetrical building is built in the styles of Neo=Classical and Romanticism together with some Moorish elements. The building features one huge dome and two smaller domes, all of which with a on top of them including a Star of David. At some parts, located underneath the roof , you can see a fragment that contains . The beautiful semi-circular cornices are supported by round shaped , which are decorated with a heart shaped motif and are crowned with Egyptian . The Romanticism pointed arches and pilasters around the windows on the second floor are beautifully decorated.
