Hariton Kuev House

The construction of the residential and commercial building, which was built according to a design of the Bulgarian architect , was completed in 1908. It was built for the Bulgarian pharmacist, deputy, and mayor of Plovdiv, Hariton Kuev, who was born in 1879 in . He is the son of Dimitar Kuev, who was a participant in the in 1876. Hariton studied and graduated in pharmacy in and later became the co-founder of the first pharmaceutical company in Bulgaria called Galenus. In 1904, he settled in Plovdiv and between 1909 and 1910 he built his own pharmacy called Maritsa, which was located not far from his house. During that time he became the first car owner in the city.

In 1908, Hariton got married to Elenka Kueva, and in 1911 he became a deputy in the 5th Great National Assembly, and between November 11 and December 30, 1919, he was the mayor of Plovdiv. He financially supports the poor people of Plovdiv, separately giving money to restore the damage caused by the great in 1928. With his money, the House for Culture and Physical Education was built in the Karshiyaka quarter. Hariton Kuev passed away in 1940, in Plovdiv, at the age of 61.

In the 1930s, the house was bought by the wealthy merchant Aris Gurbetyan, but after the coup of , 1944, the family gradually lost ownership of it. The building was nationalized for a long time but on November 10, 1989, it was restituted back to the family.

On top of the southeastern corners of the building, which is built in the style of Art Nouveau, you can see a majestic bell-shaped dome. A beautiful has been placed on top of the pointed part of the that's placed underneath the dome. Underneath the cornice, you can admire an motif, as well as a huge and richly decorated . The corner also features two balconies, both supported by two , which are adorned with floran ornamentation en consisting of leaves. Both balconies are secured with railings that consist partly of stone and partly of cast iron. This also counts for the balconies, which are placed on top of each of the two .

The that can be seen on both sides of the building are all adorned with a . They are crowned with a , with around them and underneath them a scroll-like ornament, which is embellished with and floral ornamentation. The band, which is placed underneath the frieze that contains , is lavishly adorned with all sorts of floral ornamentations. Above most of the second floor windows, you can adorn a fragment consisting of a , , laurel twigs, and guttae. An is placed underneath the windows of the oriel window, which are placed on the southern side of the building.
