Plovdiv Puppet Theater

The building, which was built according to a design that was created by the Czech–Bulgarian architect , was built somewhere around 1902. The first function of the building was administrative and used by the Municipal Enterprise for Electricity Supply and the Women's Society called Maternal Care.

Initially, the women of society gathered Bulgarian girls who had come under Greek influence, taught them to read and write in their native language, and told them Bulgarian history. During the April , the society sheltered refugees from the affected settlements and provided them with food and clothing. In the years of the , the members of the society joined the initiative to open an orphanage in the city for children left without parents during the uprising and military actions.

Soon after the , the society stopped its activities for the orphanage and searched for new ventures. They are thinking about opening a girls' high school and supporting schoolgirls with school supplies, clothes, food, and more. The determination of the new direction in the activities of the organization is connected with the assumption of the post of chairman by the well-known public figure . The school was opened on December 2, 1884, under the guidance of teacher Elisaveta Karaminkova.

In 1887, Princess , mother of Prince , accepted to become a patron and honorary chairman of the society, and in 1901 she donated a large sum of money for the construction of the building. In 1902, the society entered the new building owned by the organization, which until the , was also engaged in distributing clothes and shoes to poor children, materially supporting of the orphanage in the city, and taking care of refugees. On October 23, 1948, the society had to cease its activities by order of the Minister of the Interior.

Later on, the function of the building changed and it gained an entertainment function because the Children's Theater moved into the building and later the Puppet Theater. Around the same time, the building underwent a restoration and an upgrade that added an extra floor. The Puppet Theater was founded in 1946 and is financed by the Ministry of Culture and actively supported by the Municipality of Plovdiv. The theater has traveled to over 40 countries and participated in many international festivals.

The Neo-Renaissance building used to have three pointed , but only two are left, which are placed above two of the second floor windows. Above some of the other second floor windows, you'll be able to see a straight pediment. The decoration around these windows consists of foliage, as well as loads of . A is placed above the circle-top windows, which is surrounded by garlands. The that stretch all the way up from the second until the third floor, are all crowned with a Doric . The protruded stone blocks on the first floor give this floor a lovely multidimensional touch. The barred windows of the beautifully decorated wooden entrance door, which is located on the south side of the building, are lavishly embellished with . The that used to present on the second floor, were relocated to the third floor during the upgrade.
