Jacques Arav House

- Hristo Gruev Danov Street 7 -
The residential and commercial building, which was built around 1910, was constructed according to a design that came from the hand of the Bulgarian architect . The building was owned by the Jewish Doctor Jacques Arav and the first floor was inhabited by the Jewish family of Mois and Lily Cohen. Their son Marcel Cohen was a long-time European champion in sports shooting.

Jacques was one of the wealthy people who provided funds for the construction of the Jewish cultural center called BETEMA, which later became the community center called Shalom Aleichem. In the period from 1941 to 1944, all the Jews who lived in other neighborhoods of Plovdiv were forced to move to the Jewish ghetto. There was a Jewish family in every room of Jacques Araf's house, as his house was located on the border of the Jewish ghetto. On March 10, 1943, in the middle of the night, they took the Jews out, in nightgowns, to deport them. The then Plovdiv raised his voice and with the support of deputies, public figures, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and citizens managed to prevent the sending of 600 Plovdiv Jews to the death camps. Metropolitan Cyril took the Jews gathered for deportation under his protection and declared that if they were loaded into the wagons, he would lie down in front of the train.
