Hristo Kazandzhiev House

The construction of the residential and commercial building, which was designed by the Czech architect Toma Varhota, started in 1910 and was completed in 1911. It was built for the family of Vasilka Abadzhieva and painter Hrisko Kazandzhiev, who was born on February 9, 1874, in Shumen. He studied in Shumen and , after which he studied painting under the German painter at the Academy of Arts in where he graduated in 1896. After his return to Bulgaria in 1898, he started teaching in and .

He received his teaching license in 1905 at the State Drawing School in Sofia. From 1908 to 1932, he was a teacher at the Boys' and Girls' Gymnasium in Shumen. After his retirement, he was a teacher at the Teachers' Institute. Hristo Kazandzhiev leaves a great and interesting legacy, among which are his popular paintings, a portrait of , and captures the ship Radetsky, both created in 1911. To recreate the ship, the artist traveled to several times to sketch ships of this type and the uniforms of captains and crew.

The most striking part of the building, which is built in the styles of Eclectic and Art Nouveau, is the . The scaly sheet metal on top of the oriel window is crowned with a . A straight is placed above the second floor windows, which are supported by two that are embellished with . Around these same windows, you'll be able to see a lot of beautifully decorated floral ornamentation. The on the first floor which are built up out of stone blocks are decorated with the technique of , which is not the case with the second floor pilasters.
