After taking over the family business, Dimitrije significantly improved the trade and eventually became one of the richest Serbs of his time, but he continued to live in a modest family house until his mother's death in 1894. Both Dimitrije and Svetozar Stamenković died in 1899, within a month of each other. As Dimitrije Stamenković had no children, the Braća Stamenković company, as well as the family house, were then inherited by Svetozar's sons Đorđe and Dimitrije. They decided to build this magnificent building on the site of the old family house, with shops on the first floor, and living space on the upper floors.
