Tomas Matanović House

The residential building was built somewhere around 1886 and was built for Tomas Matanović and a few years later, he sold it to industrialist János Stagelschmidt. In 1922, the building was bought by the famous scientist and inventor Mihajlo Pupin, however, he did not live there, but his sister Persida Olćan did. He was born on October 9, 1854, as an ethnic Serb in the village , then the Austrian Empire. He went to elementary school in his birthplace, to Serbian Orthodox school, and later to German elementary school in . He enrolled in high school and later the gymnasium in , where he was one of the best students. After his father died in March 1874, while studying in at the age of 16, he quit his studies there due to financial problems and moved to the United States.

For the next five years in the United States, Mihajlo Pupin worked as a manual laborer while he learned English, Greek, and Latin. After three years of various courses, in the autumn of 1879, he successfully finished his tests and entered Columbia College in , where he became known as an exceptional athlete and scholar. After he completed his studies, he returned to Europe, he continued his schooling supervised by at the University of and at the University of under . He delivered his most important work during his years at Columbia College when he returned to the United States. Two of his main areas of research were long-distance telephony and X-rays. was a founding member of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics on 3 March 1915, which later became NASA.

In 1888, he got married to Sarah Katherine Jackson, and together they had one daughter, Barbara. After a few months of illness, he died on March 12, 1935, in New York from the effects of kidney failure.
