Villa Mehmet Kapandzi

The residential building was built somewhere between 1890 and 1895, most likely in 1893, by a design that came from the hand of the Italian architect . It was built for the rich merchant, industrialist, and banker, Mehmet Kapandzi, who was the brother of Ahmed and Yusuf. Besides being a prominent Thessalonica public figure, he was also the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Thessaloniki. The Kapandzi family are Sephardic Jews who had been expelled from Spain in 1492. The family remained in Thessaloniki until the Greek-Turkish in 1923, when they settled in .

During the , in 1912, Prince of Greece was the first Greek military commander of Thessaloniki who stayed in the villa. In the aftermath of the First Balkan War, on 1 June 1913, the of 1913 was signed in this villa. In 1917, Prime Minister , head of the Provisional Government based in Thessaloniki, settled in the villa. From 1918 to 1922, the family of Trikalon Cohen rented the second floor of the mansion.

In 1928 the building became the property of the National Bank, as exchangeable property. At the same time, the American company Foundation carried out important land improvement projects in central Macedonia. In 1938, the 5th Boys' High School was housed in the building, which remained there until 1972, with the exception of the period of the . During the of 1940, the building operated as a military bakery, while during the Occupation it was confiscated by the Germans, although they never used it. Since 1997, after long years of neglect and later the much-needed repair work, it became in use by the Cultural Center of the National Bank of Greece.

The most eye-catching feature of the Eclectic building is the tower on the northern side of the building. The hip roof on top of the tower is crowned with . The that separates the roof from the rest of the tower, is supported by loads of of various sizes. The tower itself contains multiple , as well as some that contain three each.

The roof overhang of the main building is supported by a lot of wooden corbels and some parts are decorated with a . The two balconies, which are located on the eastern and western sides of the building, are both supported by four corbels, which are richly decorated with , , and foliage. The lovely wrought iron railing that secures these balconies contains the same motifs are the barred windows of the two entrances that are located underneath these same balconies. Above the entrances that lead to the balconies, you'll be able to see two , which feature an Ionic .
