Villa Yako Modiano

The residential building, which later turned into an educational building, was built in the period between 1905 and 1906. The construction was commissioned by the wealthy Jewish banker Yako Modiano, who commissioned the design to his son, the architect, and engineer , which eventually became his first major work. Yanko was born in 1857 into the wealthy Jewish family of Saul Modiano and Fakima Kazes as one of their nine children. Yanko had taken over the Saul Modiano bank, in which his brother Samuel also participated. He was also the owner of a large number of properties, and until the beginning of the 1920s, he owned the properties of the entire area of the district of . In 1911, the caused insurmountable problems with its banking activities and suspended them. However, his large fortune was able to maintain much of his financial prosperity. He was married to Mathilde Hakim and they had six children, including his son Eli.
Yako Modiano
The Modiano family lived in the building until 1913 when it was sold to the Greek government and granted to the royal family. Later on, it was the residence of the respective Commander-in-Chief of Macedonia, and between 1916 and 1917, it was the seat of the Government of National Defense. Sometime after that, it became a palace for King of Greece, who added an outpost on the eastern side in 1937. In 1947, the newly founded Military Medical School moved into the building, and in the early 1960s, the Priestly School. At the end of the same decade, the building was granted as the residence of the Minister of Northern Greece. In 1970, the Folklore and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia became its new owner and since then showcased its collection there.

The most eye-catching features of the building, which is built in the styles of Eclectic and Art Nouveau, are the two on the entire southwestern corner. The , which are placed in the arched parts of the arcade, as well as in several other places, are all adorned with floral ornamentation.
