Kyustendil Municipality Building

The construction of the massive two-story building, which was executed in a period between 1889 and 1894, was initiated by the City Council, headed by the mayor . It's built on a plot where before the lodgings of Ottoman local nobles who emigrated to Macedonia in 1878, used to stand. The foundation stone was laid on May 11, 1889, the day of the holy brothers and of Bulgarian writing and culture. The Ministry of Public Education assigned the project to the Austrian architect . At the top of the building stands out the clock tower, the mechanism of which was made by the craftsman Georgi Mihailov from .

The building was built for the use of the Pedagogical School and its construction was entrusted to the entrepreneur brothers Ivan, Vasil, and Grigor Grebenarovi, as well as to Italian stonemasons and Kyustendil masters masons and carpenters from Tran for the finishing works. After the closure of the Pedagogical School in 1908 and with the Declaration of Independence and the Kingdom of Bulgaria, the building temporarily housed the State Boys' High School. In 1911, the Municipal Girls' High School took up residence in the building for the next 15 years. During the participation of the Kingdom of Bulgaria in the , the headquarters of the Bulgarian Army was located in the school building. In 1930, the building was ceded by the Ministry of Justice and was converted into a courthouse. After the coup of , 1944, the headquarters of the First Army moved into the building. At the end of 1959, after the Kyustendil District Court ceased to exist and the Kyustendil District Court was established, the building housed the District People's Council and the District Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party, and from 1973, the Municipal People's Council. In 1989, the building continued to be used by the Kyustendil municipality.
The building at the end of the 19th century
