Macedonian National Theater

The current multi-story building was built in the 1980s on the foundations of the old theater, which was built in 1927. The building was used by the Macedonian National Theater, which is a state theater and the oldest theater institution in North Macedonia, established on January 31, 1945. The theater functioned exclusively as a drama theater in its first two seasons and in the following four years, it was further reorganized. In 1947, an opera ensemble was created, which performed the first opera called Cavaleria Rusticana on May 9, 1947, and in 1949, a ballet ensemble was created, which performed the performance called Walpurgie's Night on January 27, 1949. Macedonian National Theater operated in the same building until the in Skopje in 1963 when the building was severely damaged and later demolished. After this, they worked in the temporary Theater Center building, until the construction of the new building was completed.
