Gevgelija is a town located in the very southeast of North Macedonia along the banks of the Vardar River, situated at the country's main border with Greece. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Gevgelija was part of the Salonica Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire.

The Sveti Spas Church is the oldest church in the region, built at the beginning of the 19th century, where people came from Thessaloniki for the fair in honor of the patron saint. In 1873, with joint funds, the people of Gevgelija built the Holy Trinity Church, and in 1895, the Saints Cyril and Methodius Church was built in the place where the chapel was built.
