Panayot Popov House

The construction of the residential building took place in 1905 and was executed according to a design that was created by the Bulgarian engineer . It was constructed for the Bulgarian great industrialist, financier, politician, and public figure Panayot Popov, who was born in 1848 in Ruse. In 1884, together with Panayot Penkov and Stoyan Pavlov, they founded the Leather Factory named Penkov-Popov in Ruse. The enterprise existed until 1906 when it fell into difficulty and was bought by a Belgian Joint Stock Company. Panayot Popov played an important role in the construction and development of the credit system in Bulgaria. At the end of 1881, the Joint Stock Savings Company named Girdap was founded and Panayot became the first chairman of the Board of Directors. In the spring of 1890, the First Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce in Ruse was established, of which Panayot became a member and its first chairman. He was also the mayor of Ruse in the period from June 30, 1893, until September 3, 1894. During his lifetime and through his will, he made a lot of donations and due to his humanity and charity, he saved many who were wronged by fate. After the death of Panayot Popov on October 7, 1910, the house was bought by Trifon Kanchev.

Trifon was born in 1873 and became a trader of shoes and shoe goods, and all kinds of sporting goods and the owner of the establishment named Red Boot. He got married to Maria Ureki, with whom he had four sons and two daughters. His son Nikola became an artist, Kuncho a financier, Slavi a merchant, and the youngest Ivan a cyclist, but died young in an accident. His daughters were Todorka, by husband Miteva, and Vyara Mateva, who married the farm owner and later economist Matyo Matev. In 1923, it was sold to the industrialist Karnik Mazlamyan, who was one of the owners of the large factory for the production of silk yarn and silk fabrics called Mazlumyan & Gurbetyan, which was founded in Ruse in 1924. Since 1951, the house has had seven different owners, who never understood each other when it came to maintenance. The building was neglected for many years and was demolished somewhere between 2007 and 2012.
