Restaurant Fischer

The Czech musician Josef Fischer, who was born in 1849 in , settled in with his first wife Maria Josefa Schmild, who was born in 1850. In 1880, two years after the of Bulgaria, they moved to Ruse and opened a restaurant there with the name Restaurant Fischer. In 1898, after the death of first his wife, he married the younger woman, Aloysia Anesini, who was born in 1869. Soon after she dies as well, and in 1903 he marries for the third time, this time with Juliana Gyurits. With these three women, he had a total of four children, including Emil and Albin, who were born in Plovdiv, and Elena and Josef, who were born in Ruse.

Restaurant Fischer, where a string orchestra often played and various celebrations were organized, also housed a beer hall. The place was very popular, but there were also complaints from local residents to the Municipality that its visitors violated public order. Some years after Josef Fischer moved his restaurant out of the building, it was purchased by entrepreneurs from . They converted it into a cinema and named it the Apollo Cinema, which was the second cinema in the city of Ruse. On January 17 and 18, 1915, the first Bulgarian film, "" with , was screened there.

In 1933 the cinema was renamed the Royal Cinema, and after the nationalization, they renamed it again, this time to Maxim Gorky Cinema. In 1970, the old cinema building was demolished and a new modern cinema was built, meeting the technical requirements for the projection of large-format films. The new building was built according to a project of the Bulgarian architect Ivan Elkin. In 2009, the cinema was demolished, and a modern boutique shopping complex by the name of Royal City Center was built on the site.

The restaurant of Josef Fischer was built in the style of Art Nouveau and was lavishly decorated with all sorts of geometric forms, including many circles and rectilinear forms. The segmental part that was placed between the two huge piers was brightened up by a pretty unusual strip of . The three fragments underneath it were beautifully painted with murals depicting a ship and two buildings. A little further down, between the , you could see a beautiful play of windows in all shapes and sizes, which brought a nice amount of daylight into the restaurant. The plot included a yard terrace that was enclosed by a fence and gate that features wrought iron ornamentation.

The top of the building, which was built in 1970 in the Neo-Classical style, was crowned by a huge that was adorned with dentils. The second floor windows, which were placed within the part of the building, were flanked by pilasters that were crowned with an Ionic .
The modern cinema that was built in 1970
