Bankya is a famous national and international balneological resort, a city, and at the same time a district of Sofia. The first settlers on the territory of Bankia were Thracian tribes from 2500 years ago. Archaeological excavations revealed remains of Roman buildings, walls, sewers, and bronze bracelets from between the 4th and 5th centuries AD.

The resort is a national center for the rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular diseases and for the prevention of those at risk of them. Its fame is because both its air and water have exceptional healing properties. The water of Bankya, which springs from a depth of about 850 meters, is clear, colorless, odorless, soft, silicic, fluorine, hydrocarbonate, sodium, and with radon content.
