Cluj-Napoca, or simply Cluj, also known by the Hungarian name Kolozsvár, is a city located in the northwestern part of the country as the second-most populous city in Romania and the seat of Cluj County. On the site of the city was a pre-Roman settlement named Napoca. The first written mention of the city's current name, as a Royal Borough, was in 1213 under the Medieval Latin name Castrum Clus.

Cluj-Napoca's salient architecture is primarily Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic. The modern era has also produced a remarkable set of buildings in the Art Nouveau style. The mostly utilitarian Communist-era architecture is also present, although only to a certain extent, as Cluj-Napoca never faced a large systematization program.
