Velingrad is a town in Pazardzhik Province, Southern Bulgaria, located at the western end of Chepino Valley, which is a part of the Rhodope Mountains. The cultural layers give grounds to claim that the Chepino region was inhabited by Thracian tribes in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. The ancient historians Herodotus and Thucydides provide written records of this era.

Velingrad is one of the largest spa resorts in Bulgaria and is known as the "Spa Capital of the Balkans". Velingrad was formed in 1948 by the merger of the villages of Ladzhene, Kamenitsa, and Chepino. One of the oldest Bulgarian churches, the Holy Trinity Church, is located in the largest district of Kamenitsa. The floor of its altar was used for hiding weapons during the Russo-Turkish War.
