Novi Sad, which is also known by the Hungarian name Újvidék, is the second-largest city in Serbia and the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. It is located in the southern portion of the Pannonian Plain and on the banks of the Danube River. Novi Sad was founded in 1694 when Serb merchants formed a colony across the Danube from the Petrovaradin Fortress.

The city houses only a few buildings built before the 19th century since the old Novi Sad was destroyed during the 1849 revolution. The center of today's city is therefore dominated by architecture from the 19th century. Religious buildings in Novi Sad include mainly Christian religious buildings, in addition to which there is also a Jewish synagogue, as well as mosques of the Islamic religious community.
