Plovdiv, is the second-largest city in Bulgaria, standing on the banks of the Maritsa River in the historical region of Thrace. Plovdiv is the cultural capital of Bulgaria and was the European Capital of Culture in 2019. Plovdiv is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe. Plovdiv has been given several names throughout its long history, including Odryssa, Poneropolis, and Philippopolis.

The rich history of Plovdiv has ensured that the city is rich in all kinds of historical sights. This past is reflected in the many Roman excavations, including the beautifully preserved theater that is still in use today. But the Ottoman presence can also still be felt, and the subsequent Bulgarian Revival. The beautiful architectural and historical reserve of the old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
